Only one players has won the calendar Grand Slam in tennis that being Steffi Graf in 1988 winning the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Serena Williams is on track to win the career Grand Slam which is something that is certainly achievable however she hasn’t won the Wimbledon title since 2012 and has gone out before the second week for the last two years.
In 2013 Serena went out to Sabine Lisicki in the fourth round and last year lost to Alize Cornet in the third round. So far this year Serena has a win/loss record of 32/1 which is pretty incredible and has only lost to Petra Kvitova in Madrid semi-finals losing 6-2 6-3. Halep and McHale also progressed to the next round of tournaments in Rome and Indian Wells against Serena but that was due to Serena pulling out of the matches before they even begun with injuries.
Serena will face Margarita Gasparyan in the first round from Russia which you’d expect her to win but who else could she play on her way to lifting her 6th title?
In the second round Serena would probably play Timea Babos from Hungary however it’s in the third round where it does get interesting. Heather Watson and Caroline Garcia will play each other in R1 and could get to round three but so could Dominika Cibulkova who recently returned from injury and could cause some problems for Serena.
I think in round four every tennis fan wants to see Serena v Venus again at Wimbledon. Their last meeting at SW19 was in 2009 when they met in the final which Serena won 7-6 6-2. Quarter finals is a bit tougher to predict, Serena should be Suarez-Navarro or Ivanovic if they meet her however Azarenka is also in the side of the draw and the Belarussian did have some match points against her in Rome.
If things pan out as you’d expect the semi-final should be against Sharapova who Serena hasn’t lost to since Wimbledon 2004 which is incredible! Sharapova maybe the favourite to get there but I wouldn’t rule out a surprise from Karolina Pliskova and of course finalist at Roland Garros Lucie Safarova.
The final could be against the defending champion Petra Kvitova who is in fact the only player to beat Serena this year on the clay in Madrid. The other contender could be Simona Halep however her form hasn’t been as good as she would have liked lately.
Can Serena keep the Calendar Grand Slam going?
