Can Simona Halep find her best tennis at Wimbledon?

Simona Halep is one of my favourite players on the WTA tour and one of the best players in the world however she hasn’t been at her best recently and has been struggling. This is the first time since Simona really broke into the top 10 that she has struggled for consistency in matches.

2015 hasn’t been a disaster for Halep as she has won 3 titles but her form is quite worrying and is producing too many errors in a match for a top 5 player. At the end of April Simona played in the semi-finals of WTA Stuttgart and lost the match in three sets with 47 unforced errors compared to the 26 by Wozniacki. Watching the match Wozniacki did deserve the win however the error count from Halep was way to high like it was in her first round loss to Alize Cornet in Madrid and Suarez Navarro in the semi-finals of Rome. In her loss to Mirjana Lucic-Baroni she only produced 15 errors which was less than her opponent but only 5 winners compared to 29 I believe.

Her match against Mladenovic in Birmingham the other day was odd. I did think it would be a tough match as Kristina poses a threat on grass with her serve and power. After winning the first set you’d expect her to go on and win the match however recent form it’s been anything but. Mladenovic is a good player but for Halep to go on to lose the second 6-0 is bizarre and then lose the final set 7-4 on the tie-breaker.

Simona isn’t playing badly from the first to last ball as she did play very well v Mladenovic in the first set but in the second set, there were a few more errors the intensity dropped and Mladenovic improved. I don’t think the recent run can be describe as disastrous but worrying. I wouldn’t expect Simona to put up a big challenge at Wimbledon. She does have semi-final points to defend which we would be good if she could get that far but I think quarter finals will be good for her but I hope we start seeing the Halep we know in the next few weeks.

I hope Simona has a good chance of going far in the tournament and not having Serena or Maria in her half is good. The problem is because of the way she has been losing matches you’d normally expect her to win I wouldn’t be surprised by a third round exit to Kuznetsova or a fourth round exit to Lisicki.
