Naomi Broady d. Alja Tomljanovic 6-3 6-4
The first British wildcard in action today was Naomi Broady who set the bar high with a fantastic win against the world number 78 Alja Tomljanovic. When Naomi got a first serve into play in the first set it was virtually impossible for Tomljanovic to win the point with Broady winning 10/12 points on the first serve however in the second set she bettered that winning 18/19 points on her first serve. Her second serve wasn’t as good but with the help of her dominance on first serve and aces (12) from the Brit she defeated Tomljanovic 6-3 6-4 in just 72 minutes.
Johanna Konta d. Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1 6-3
Johanna Konta’s tournament could not have gotten off to a better start against Gajdsovoa going 3-0 up in the match before seeing some more break points for 5-1 and took them before closing out the set 6-1 in little time at all.
The second set started well as well for Konta who went up a break and held serve well a number of times saving a couple of break points but managed to keep hold of serve for a 5-3 lead and one game away from the second round. Konta didn’t have to face the nerve of serving out the match as with another forehand winner Konta won 6-1 6-3 to advance to the second round.
Tsvetana Pironkova d. Katie Swan 6-2 6-2
In her first WTA match on the main tour there was no pressure on Swan to go on a winning run and can be proud of her efforts against Pironkova. Katie went down an early break in the match and was then broken again giving Tsvetana a 5-2 lead serving out the set with no problem at all.
Sadly Katie was broken at the start of the second set as well going 1-0 and 2-0 down but got on the board for 1-2. Katie went on to lose the second set 6-2 as well but can be very proud of her efforts against a player who has played over 600 matches on the tour!
