Great Britain’s number two Johanna Konta is through to the quarter finals of WTA Nottingham after another impressive victory today finishing off her match against Monica Puig which was suspended last night. Going into the tournament Konta was ranked at 147 in the world and her wins this week so far have got her up to 139 and a win in the next round against Monica Niculescu in the next round will see her climb to 127.
Konta has had a good few weeks on the tour qualifying for Roland Garros but sadly couldn’t get a main draw win under her belt despite a very good performance against Allertova and lost the first set 7-6 (19-17) on the tie-break.
In the first round in Nottingham Konta defeated the 7th seed Magdalena Rybarikova with a convincing 6-3 6-3 win against the Slovakian. Yesterday Jo begun her match against Puig but after the second set the match was postponed due to poor lighting but was resumed today with Johanna taking a 5-3 lead in the set before Puig got it back to 5-5 and Konta finished off the win on the tie-break to advance to the quarter finals.
Monica Niculescu has 392 career wins under her belt however the Romania hasn’t had a very good year on the tour with a win/loss record of 13/12 to her name and hasn’t got a run of wins going this season which could be a good opportunity for Konta to progress to the semi-finals.
