England’s World Cup campaign in Canada has not gotten off to a good start with a 1-0 defeat to one of the tournament favourites France. England started the match with a 4-1-4-1 with Claire Rafferty and Lucy Bronze at left back and left midfield to help nullify the threat posed by Thomis which they did very well.
It did take France 20 minutes or so to come to terms with the way England were lining up however after that period of the game they did begin to take control and their quality shone through after a bit of miscommunication/lack of concentration from Laura Bassett and Claire Rafferty as Laura’s pass to Claire was short and the French striker Le Sommer scored just before the half hour mark.
With the way England lined up if they went 1-0 down which we did it would be difficult to for them to gain any control in the match. Eniola Aluko was isolated up top throughout the whole match and worked very hard but couldn’t get much help around her to try and cause France problems. The only time England did put pressure on was later on in the second half but couldn’t find a breakthrough with only 1 shot on target throughout the 90 minutes and at times struggled to keep possession when we did have the chances to get forward.
Matches against Mexisco and Colombia follow in the next week or so and are must win matches for England or face an early exit from the competition.
