Serena Williams defeats Victoria Azarenka 3-6 6-4 6-2

Azarenka got her third round meeting with Serena Williams under way and it looked like being a difficult start for the Belarussian however she managed to hold serve after some pressure from the world number one and then broke Serena’s serve to take a 2-0 lead followed by a break by Serena for 2-1. Serena held for 2-2 but suddenly went 2-5 down after some sublime tennis from Azarenka working the ball around the court. Serena got to 3-5 forcing Vika to serve out the opening set. Some good serving from Vika and she took the first set 6-3.

In the second set Serena got it underway holding for 1-0 but quickly went 1-2 down being broken and Vika extended her lead to 2-4. All of a sudden Serena fought back and won four games in a row to take the second set 6-4 with a bit of controversy as on one of the set points Vika hit a ball onto the line which was called out seconds after Serena hit the ball meaning the game should have gone to deuce by the umpire decided to replay the point and Vika was broken for 4-6 and Serena took the set.

After winning four games in a row you’d of expected Serena to extend her run to five however the former champion was broken by Vika who took a 1-0 lead! Azarenka stepped it up and impressively held to love for a 2-0 lead! Serena got on the board for 1-2 but still a break down with tensions high on court! Serena saw three break back points and took the second with the help of the net cord which made Azarenka having to hit a wider ball. For the first time in the match Serena led taking a 3-2 lead on serve putting that pressure on Vika to keep hold of her serve. Azarenka was then broken after a forehand miles long greeted to a screech from the 27th seed and Serena then extended her lead to 5-2 with a good hold and one game away from the fourth round. Serena did have to serve out the match as she broke Vika’s serve to win in three sets and you can’t help but think if only that bad call from the umpire and the lines judge went in Vika’s favour and she got the game back to deuce in the second set…
