Frances Tiafoe who turned 17 in January is the latest star of American Tennis. Frances has been rewarded with a wildcard into the main draw at Roland Garros which is a fantastic achievement and will be making his Grand Slam debut very soon. This won’t be Frances’ first match on the main tour as he made his debut as a 16 year old at the Citi Open and lost in a close match to Evgeny Donskoy ranked 111th in the world losing 6-4 6-4.
Frances is ranked at 292 in the world and I do think there has been a lot of talk about how good he can be and people say he will be top 100 in a year or so. Frances at the start of the year was ranked as low as 1142 in the world and this year has beaten 22 players ranked above him already this season which is a fantastic achievement wherever you are in the rankings.
Frances’ first top 100 win came against Facundo Bagnis ranked 92 in the world in the first round of a challenger in Tallahassee where he then went on to lose in the final to Facundo Arguello. This tournament is where he made his name last month and when people started talking about him being a future American star which is a lot of pressure to put on a 17 year old.
Frances Tiafoe opens his Roland Garros account with a tough match against Martin Klizan but if he could come through that challenge he would then face either Lucas Pouille or Giles Simon in round two.
